Despite past market performance by Latin America’s largest mobile-phone company, America Movil, which until recently showed more than a twenty percent increase in customers, analysts are predicting that the financial quarter ended 30 June 2008 is likely to reveal the company’s worst quarterly stock performance in the past six years. It would seem that, in part, this situation can be attributed to the slowing down of subscriber growth as well as the possible intervention of regulators with regard to mobile call costs.
Despite the ongoing credit crisis and sluggish economic growth in many countries, the 12th annual World Wealth Report released recently by Merrill Lynch and Gapgemini revealed that the number of millionaires (otherwise referred to as the world’s high net worth individuals – HNWIs) world-wide has increased by six percent to 10.1 million with a combined wealth of $40.7 trillion during 2007.
Transatlantic stock exchange giant, NYSE Euronext, has surged ahead in its quest to gain ground as a truly global stock exchange by buying a 25 percent stake in the State of Qatar’s Doha securities market. A $250 million cash payment will seal the deal, giving NYSE Euronext a firm foothold in the fast-growing economy of the Middle East.
The ultimate goal of innovation is to implement positive change, and innovation is an important factor for the increase of wealth in an economy. However, often the financial benefits of innovation are only realized in the long term. This can be a problem for a management team that is focused on appeasing investors above all else and are, therefore, driven by quarterly results. They may be reluctant to invest in innovation, no matter how promising, for fear of negatively impacting on short-term financial performance.
NASDAQ OMX Group’s U.S. and Nordic stock exchanges consolidated market performance statistics for the month of May 2008 were released on 23 June. Following the successful NASDAQ bid to buy the Swedish stock exchange OMX, the deal was finally completed on 27 February 2008, with the company now going by the name of NASDAQ OMX Group, Inc. As an American public company, NASDAQ OMX Group operates the New York based NASDAQ stock exchange, as well as eight OMX stock exchanges located in the Nordic and Baltic regions.
The liquidity theory asserts that the stock market is no different from any other market in that it is all a matter of supply and demand. The liquidity theory claims that stock prices are determined by the number of shares in the stock market, together with the amount of money available to buy them, irrespective of what their fundamental value may be. Stock market liquidity trends are analyzed and the information is utilized to predict in which direction the market is headed.
The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has sounded a warning to clients to be prepared for a crash in stock and credit markets on a global scale over the next three months. The negative impact of rampant global inflation on the major central banks is seen as the chief contributing factor to this gloomy outlook.
