NSE - National Stock Exchange

Compliments from a New Quarter!

You may think that communism is dead, but West Bengal in India is a place on earth where it thrives! Communists here are not of the Stalin variety, and return to the people at prescribed intervals, and build on their popular mandate at every election. Pragmatism has been a hall mark of Eastern India communism, and the State Government has not baulked at cooperating with stock market circles to create jobs and to raise revenues. Kolkata, once called Calcutta, the capital city of West Bengal, has witnessed a heart warming commercial revival in recent times, attracting the best companies to its fold.

A path breaking move in the direction of restoring Eastern India to its Victorian leadership of industrial development has been an approach by the Calcutta Stock Exchange (CSE) to the National Stock Exchange (NSE) for collaboration and mutual benefits. Communist rule in the 1970s brought corporate activity to a bit of standstill, and with it, the CSE faded in to the background of stock market activity in India.

The NSE has rapidly expanded its infrastructure throughout India, and has established a name for modern and reliable stock market practices. The CSE would now like its brokers to be able to use NSE’s trading facilities. The benefits for CSE are obvious, but the NSE must also lick its chops at prospects of grabbing the growing swell of investment funds in this region!

It will not be all smooth sailing because the CSE working methods are somewhat antiquated! Coming up to speed with NSE’s international and professional work standards, will call for a whole new mind set in a city accustomed to processions, red flags and business disruption! However, the CSE is unlikely to have approached the NSE without tacit communist approval, and the move can create large new value with political support.

Eastern India is rich in natural resources and has some of the sub-continent’s best educational institutions. The business and growth potentials of the area are at least on par with the western part of India where NSE has its main base. CSE brokers are known for their commercial acumen, and having them on board can give the NSE a huge competitive advantage.
