The Chicago Mercantile Exchange
The Chicago Mercantile Exchange as a Symbol of Stock Market Culture
The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) deserves the respect and admiration of all stock market players, including competing Exchanges! The CME has over a century of unbroken excellence in stock market service. It has maintained its leadership of the business of futures in the face of the most exacting international competition. The CME presents an intriguing blend of tradition and modernity. The Public Outcry system of people frantically signaling transactions to each other continues even in the 21st century, yet the CME also offers 24*7 electronic trading from the remotest corner of the world. It is simultaneously a living museum and a contemporary exposition of the best of the stock market!
Though the CME was formed in 1919, the 20th century had not been born when the concept of futures took shape on a stock market format. The vagaries of farm production suited trading in futures very well, so it should come as no surprise that dairy products were amongst the first commodities in which the precursor of the CME dealt. True to form, futures in agricultural products continue to be mainstays of the CME to this day. The Exchange has added futures in sophisticated sectors such as currencies, interest rates, and securities, over the years, and has grown rapidly to become the largest stock market for futures in the world. Few other professionally managed organizations can claim the kind of influence which the CME has on futures.
Organizations endure and rise above competition because of continuous adherence to core values. The CME is a sterling example in this respect for stock market observers and analysts. Integrity and a customer focus have marked this Exchange ever since it first opened its doors. The CME has witnessed swings in all directions of the U.S. economy, and of conditions in other countries. It has remained steadfast in keeping its operating standards at the best levels and squeaky clean through both ups and downs. However, it has also been forward looking, never shying away from investments and projects to use emerging technology even before other Exchanges get wind of it! The stock market world can call the CME its own, for it has grown far beyond the limits of the city which hosts its offices and trading floors!
