AMEX - American Stock Exchange
The American Stock Exchange, or AMEX, is located in located in New York and is the presently one of the three biggest stock exchanges that is trading within the United States. The size of the stock exchange is measured by the volume of trade that runs through the exchange. AMEX deals mostly in securities, such as exchange-traded funds, derivatives and small cap stocks, dealing with about 10 % of the American trade. Its’ biggest competitors used to be the New York Stock Exchange, or NYSE, and NASDAQ, meaning National Association of Securities Dealers). NASDAQ and AMEX have since merged, although the American Stock Exchange still trades as a separate entity.
The American Stock Exchange is known as an auction market. This means that business is done from a trading floor that has specialists and brokers. Each specialist handles a specific security, and they will handle the trading on this security. Specialist are there to ensure that the market they are dealing with, stays liquid, and that is done by bringing the sellers and the buyers together. The brokers’ job is to take selling and buying orders from their clients, to the specialist. They will move across the floor, liaising between the specialists and their clients. With more than 1 700 trade options on indexes, stocks and other trade markets, AMEX is amongst the worlds largest and ensures a busy day at the office for all that are involved. Some of the companies that can be found on the AMEX are British American Tobacco, Ludin Mining Corp, Bio-Rad Laboratories, Evergreen Energy and Imperial Oil. Companies such as Coinmach Service Corp and Centreplate Inc. are known as Equity Income Hybrid Securities or are generally termed as Income Deposit Securities.
New York concentrates mainly on the service sector, but has a large and diverse manufacturing sector. This includes the manufacturing of paper, food products, computer products, cameras, material and sport related equipment and accessories. Mass communication, entertainment and advertising, ranks among New York’s most influential industries. On the outskirts of New York, in areas such as Long Island and Finger Lakes, crops, onions, potatoes, apples and wines are produced. It also has its own mineral sources such as zinc, cement and salt.
The New York Port has said that Brazil, Italy, China, India and Germany are the top five ports of trade, that trade in general cargo. The most shipped cargo has been machinery, plastic and wood pulp. In the import sectors, plastic, beverages and vehicles ranked amongst the top three most imported goods. Exports to India included steel scrap, iron and machinery, and Russia imported meat and vehicles. Beer and plastic is imported from Belguim.
