  • Spreading the Risk with Collective Investment Schemes - 29 January 2010
  • Investors who are not in a position to dabble in a wide range of stock market investments as an individual, may want to consider a collective investment scheme, in which a group of investors share the costs as well as the benefits of wide-range investing. Depending on where you are, you may find collective investment schemes being referred to by different names, including funds, investment funds, managed funds and mutual funds – although in the US, mutual funds refers to open-end funds.

  • Gas Prices Falling in Line With Oil Prices - 25 January 2010
  • While declining oil prices over the last week have not necessarily caught the attention of consumers as much as they have speculators and impacted businesses, the falling gas prices have. Friday (January 22) marked the seventh consecutive day of falling fuel prices with the current national average at $2.73, according to Wright Express and the Oil Price Information Service.

  • Gold Price Spikes as Jobs Disappoint - 11 January 2010
  • Just when it appeared that the gold price was ready to reverse its long-running and fast-paced upward trend, speculators have begun to jump back in. After falling to a 60-day low of $1,080.50, the price of gold reached its highest point in just over a month at the close of New York trade on January 6th.

  • Oil Slides Back Toward $74 - 21 December 2009
  • As temperatures plummet with the winter months in many parts of the US, some speculators appear to be expecting increased crude demand to result. Benchmark crude oil prices were up $1.22 to $73.87 in early Friday (December 18) morning trade on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

  • Oil Down Near $70 - 10 December 2009
  • After failing to cruise past the $80 level in recent weeks, crude oil has drifted lower toward the $70 mark. Still, oil remains relatively low in the near-term.

  • Disappointing Black Friday – Will Cyber Monday Save the Day? - 30 November 2009
  • American consumers are still hard-pressed for cash, and are likely to remain so for some time to come, but retailers were nonetheless hopeful that Black Friday would coax shoppers to use credit cards and dip into the household budget to stock up for the festive season. Certainly, shoppers turned out in their thousands to take advantage of Black Friday specials, with many retailers opening at midnight on Thanksgiving in an effort to have first claim on consumer dollars. However, when the dust and excitement settled, it was revealed that Black Friday had been disappointing as shoppers had spent less on average than they did a year ago.

  • Russell Indexes: Tracking Investment Manager Performance - 19 November 2009
  • Launched in 1984 by Russell Investments as a tool to measure distinct market sectors and track the performance of US investment managers, the Russell Indexes are widely respected in investment circles. This is evidenced by the fact that in November 2009 a total of $4.3 trillion in investment assets were benchmarked to Russell Indexes, accounting for 63.3 percent of all assets benchmarked by institutional investors. Russell Indexes consist of the broad-market based Russell 3000 Index, along with a number of sub-components such as the Russell 2500 Index, Russell 2000 Index and Russell 1000 Index.
